A chilly November evening at Lurgan's Pollock Park saw a memorable meeting of young rugby talent as the local U14s hosted a combined Swedish side, Stockholm U14. The visitors, representing a collaborative effort between several Swedish clubs including Hammarby, Attila, Stockholm Sharks, Erikslund, Troján and Uppsala, made the journey worthwhile in what turned out to be an enriching experience for all involved.
Lurgan RFC set a welcoming tone with a spirited pre-match ceremony, complete with music and fireworks, showing that youth rugby is as much about creating memories as it is about competition. Despite the near-freezing temperatures, both teams warmed to their task quickly.
The Swedish visitors showed impressive coordination for a combined team, particularly in their kicking game and forward play. Lurgan, for their part, defended resolutely and showed plenty of promise in their attacking movements. While the final score of 38-5 favored the visitors, both sides demonstrated skills and sportsmanship that would make their coaches proud.
What stood out wasn't just the rugby - it was the spirit in which the game was played. Despite the occasional penalty, respect for the referee never wavered, and both teams showed that competitive rugby and good sportsmanship go hand in hand.
The post-match gathering in the clubhouse highlighted what youth rugby is all about - making friends and sharing experiences across borders. As the first match of Stockholm U14s Northern Ireland tour, with their next fixture against Mid Ulster Barbarians, it set a positive tone for what promises to be a memorable sporting exchange.
In an age where winning often dominates youth sports, this match reminded us that building international friendships and developing young players' love for the game matters most.
